SOCIAL SECURITY

The participant of an Exchange Visitor Program is not subject to the Social Security Tax and the employer should not make this deduction from the trainee’s paycheck.

SOCIAL SECURITY
Deductions are made under the category of “Social Security” or “FICA”, if deductions have been made on the paycheck the employer should obtain the refund and then reimburse the candidate.

Social Security Card

Although the candidate will not be subject to the Social Security tax, the employer will most likely ask the candidate to obtain a social security number and card. The social security number is used for tax identification purposes.

Social security numbers are issued from the national office of the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, Maryland. The trainee receives the social security card within three weeks of the date the application is processed. When applying for the social security card, the candidate may call the toll free number 1-800-772-1213 to inquire about the status of the application. The trainee will need the receipt number to track the application. The employer may also ask to see the receipt to verify that the candidate applied for a social security card.
